FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How challenging will the trip be?

This will be a physically demanding trip that requires you to do multi-day backcountry alpine hiking and camping, plus carry a heavy load. If you commit to the trip early on, you'll have plenty of time to build up your hiking muscles, and I'm happy to provide resources to help you prepare.

  • What gear do I need?

Check out REI's trip website for a detailed gear list or take a look at the gear list below. A few basics include lots of warm layers, windproof rain gear, good hiking shoes, and a 70+ liter daypack for the trek. I also suggest trekking poles just to be safe.

  • What will the weather be like?

The weather in the high alpine regions of Olympic National Park can vary greatly. It's not unusual to encounter rain, sleet, fog, and intense sun during a short stay of just a few days. Typically summer temperatures average between 65 – 75 during the day with evening lows in the 40's and low 50's, although variations outside this range are not unusual. Visitors should plan accordingly and follow the recommended gear list for this trip closely.

  • Will there be other solo travelers?

Yes! Most definitely. On each tour there's been a large number of solo travelers, including ME! Friends, couples, and family members are also totally welcome. We just ask that everyone in the group be 18 or older. REI Adventures has some great info on their solo travelers page, here

  • What is included in the trip cost?

Round trip group transfer from designated Seattle Area hotel to trailhead, meals as noted in the REI Adventures daily itinerary, campsite and backcountry permits and fees are all included in the cost.

  • Are there any additional costs?

Transportation from your hometown to group meeting point, insurance of any kind, alcoholic beverages and guide gratuities are NOT INCLUDED in the cost. You are also responsible for all gear not provided by REI Adventures. See REI's trip website for details on what to bring or check out the complete gear list below.
