Summer is now in full swing, and you might be aski

Summer is now in full swing, and you might be asking yourself IF and HOW you can safely travel during COVID-19. If you’re like me, you’re not planning on flying or staying in hotels for a looooong time. You’re also taking COVID-19 and social distancing super seriously (my partner Ryan is immunocompromised), but that doesn’t mean the entire summer has to be a wash.

It requires a high level of personal responsibility, but with proper planning and precautions, I think it’s possible to do a little road tripping and car camping while still protecting yourself and the local communities that you pass through. In my new blog post, I share some tips for road tripping and camping during COVID-19 (assuming that there aren’t any travel restrictions in place).

Did you know that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) leases public lands to oil and gas interests for as little as $2 an acre? Here in Utah, there is currently a proposal being considered to lease up to 82,000 acres right around Moab - including places many of you have probably been to and love. These potential leases are located within 1 1/2 miles from Arches, a 1/2 mile from Canyonlands, 3/4 of a mile from Dead Horse Point, 1 mile from Bears Ears and a 1/4 mile from this stretch of the Green River that I canoed last week.

These public lands offer unrivaled access to outdoor recreation - whether you want to hike, bike, paddle, climb, or go off-roading, this area has is all. This land is also sacred to a number of native tribes, some of who have been connected to this land for 11,000 years.

Approving these leases would affect the area’s “Dark Sky Status,” increase pollution, and would affect the bottom line for Moab’s recreation-based businesses.

An earlier version of this proposal also included the Slickrock Trail - one of the most famous mountain biking trails in Utah. Enough people took action to call, write, and sign petitions that the Sand Flats area where the Slickrock Trail is located was removed from the proposal. That means our voices matter, and it’s time to raise a stink once again.

I didn’t want a dog. I really didn’t. Back in

I didn’t want a dog. I really didn’t. Back in 2016, I was in Nepal trekking to Everest Basecamp and Ryan and I had been dating for about 6 months. I got a text from Ryan with a photo of the most ridiculously cute puppy I had ever seen with the words “I’m sorry ❤️” Now almost 4 years later here we are, and I couldn’t be more grateful.
