You guys know I’m a big advocate of Leave No Trace principles. They’re equally important to me when I’m in my van as when I’m out on the trail. One of the LNT principles, Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces, is often a determining factor in where we park. Basically, if a trail or campsite exists, we use it. If it’s not a clear campsite, trail, or road, we don’t use it. We also stick to rock, gravel, and dry grass whenever possible to protect fragile flora and fauna.

One of the best perks of traveling in my van is all the spectacular places I get to wake up to (like this one). It’s what draws a lot of us to #vanlife and what keeps us stoked after a long drive when we’re ready to settle in for the night. It can be tempting to pull into a spot that no one’s parked before, to get some privacy or that idyllic photo, but I strive to honor the LNT principles even if it means I don’t get the “perfect” spot.

The Leave No Trace framework encourages us to find freedom through responsibility when I’m interacting with the outdoors. This way, we all have healthy wild lands to explore for years to come. What tips can you share with our community about how to minimize our footprint while traveling or camping?

Traveling throughout the Western US, I’ve experienced a fair share of wildfires but nothing even close to what’s happening in Australia. Since September, raging fires have been burning out of control throughout Australia. The fires are bigger and more severe than any recorded in the world - about the size of New York and New Jersey.

According to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, larger flames are reacting with the atmosphere and producing pyrocumulonimbus clouds (fire clouds), a weather phenomenon that creates an “ember attack”. The result? Extreme wind, lightning, and hotter-burning fires. And there’s no end in sight as another heat wave is right around the corner.

Scientists have predicted this for over 20 years. Extreme drought conditions continued to worsen while the burning of coal, oil, and gas has rapidly increased in the last 5 years. Climate experts agree that this has led to more dangerous, uncontrollable fires and the mass devastation that’s happening right now.

An estimated BILLION animals have already been lost and the death toll is increasing as we speak. Mammals, reptiles, birds, pollinators - vital species in the ecosystem have lost their habitats, which may lead to the extinction of certain species.
At least 25 people have died and roughly 2,000 homes have been destroyed. This is a climate catastrophe that is only going to get worse if we continue to ignore the impacts of climate change.
