For this month’s giveaway, I wanted to highlight a few companies that are doing their part to help reduce the growing problem of plastic pollution in the ocean.
In my past life, I worked extensively on marine debris issues, and I was recently reminded of just how bad things have gotten when the video below surfaced on the web. It shows a team of researchers in Costa Rica removing a plastic straw from a sea turtle’s nostril.
Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident. In fact, over 14 billion pounds of trash end up in our oceans every year…much of which is single-use plastic items such as plastic bags, plastic water bottles, and food containers.
This plastic pollution kills hundreds of thousands of marine species every year, and anyone who loves surfing, diving, sailing, and other ocean-based recreation should care about this atrocity.
There are many ways to take action, but the easiest thing you can do is stop using single-use plastic items. It’s as simple as doing things like taking your own bags to the grocery store and drinking out of a reusable water bottle. Studies also show that plastic isn’t necessarily the best for your health, so by swapping out the plastic for reusable items, you are doing both yourself and our planet a favor.
Another thing you can do is to join the Annual International Coastal Cleanup that takes place in September every year, where over half a million volunteers gather to collect trash off of our beaches and waterways. This year’s event is taking place on Saturday September 19th. For more information on the event and to find a cleanup site near you, visit this page on the Ocean Conservancy’s website.

This month, I’ve partnered with To-Go Ware, ChicoBag, and Klean Kanteen to put together a prize package that will help two lucky Bearfoot readers reduce their consumption of single-use plastics. Here’s what you’ll get:
To-Go Ware two-tier stainless steel food container: This portable, dishwasher-safe lunchbox is perfect for picnics or the workplace. You can even ask your favorite local takeout joint to put your food in here rather than a styrofoam to-go box. To-Go Ware RePeat Utensil Set: Made of bamboo, this durable , lightweight set comes with a fork, knife, spoon, and chopsticks, and the pouch is made of recycled water bottle plastic that would otherwise end up in a landfill (or the ocean). Take these utensils to work or store them in your camping bin so they are ready to go for your next outdoor adventure. Klean Kanteen Insulated Classic 20 oz Water Bottle: I absolutely love my Klean Kanteen. Their newest bottles are double walled to keep those cold beverages cold and hot drinks hot. And (I probably shouldn’t admit this but…) even after extended periods of use without washing, the stainless steel helps avoids that musty funk that often happens with plastic water bottles. Finally, if you are worried about drinking tap water – as it turns out, bottled water is actually less regulated and no safer than what comes out of the tap. So it’s time to get a Brita filter and put those fears about tap water to rest. ChicoBag VITA RePete: Another product made out of recycled plastic water bottles, this reusable shopping bag is really quite amazing. With a 40 pound carrying capacity, it can hold a ton of stuff from the grocery store or famers market, and the shoulder straps make it surprisingly comfortable to carry. It also folds up into a tiny little pouch, making it convenient to store or keep in your glove box so it’s ready when you are out running errands.
Enter using any of the options in the box below. And don’t forget to share with your friends for additional entries! Giveaway ends September 30th.
